Concord by Sylvania: at JT Green’s grocery store in Belfast

Sylvania lighting helps one of Northern Ireland’s oldest grocery stores become a shopping destination

The original JT Greens shop, Greens Food Fare, was established in Lisburn’s Bow Street, Northern Ireland, in 1886. Originally opened as a fine produce butchery shop, the business has seen expansion over the past 134 years and remains famous for ‘speciality foods from around the world.’

Bomb damage, aging, and tired fixtures led to planning permission for a £2 million investment to restore its former glory – a prestigious shopping environment akin to the Harrods food hall in London.

Sylvania describes the project, “Our brief was to provide a sympathetic lighting design, with visual interest, to complement the peeled back Victoria features discovered by the architectural team. Using the Sylsmart system was key to this and a nice touch for the project. It helps differentiate the retail design from other stores. They can set different ambiences, for different displays, at different times of the day, providing a subtle yet engaging customer experience.”

The integration of Sylvania’s Startflex 4000K LED tape, hidden behind the detailed plastered cornicing, not only provides highly efficient and energy-saving light levels but creates a stunning ceiling feature not found in any other retail shop in Northern Ireland. Ludo spot provides the store’s general lighting, and dimming is controlled via the easy-to-use and install Sylsmart system.

.Conservation architects, Ashley Lamont of Whittaker and Watt explain, “Our design approach creates a fascinating blend with the original historic fabric of the building and delivers a uniquely special, and welcoming interior look and feel for Greens Food Fare“.
