Tamlite: talking about TM65 and embodied carbon

.

So far in this series we’ve talked about dark skies; remanufacturing and the circular economy – the main issues of the day if ever we had any. In this podcast, Dan Griffiths and John Bullock look to the issue of embodied carbon in building services – and, of course, within the lighting industry.

.

We can think of embodied carbon as being similar to CAPEX – its a spend that goes on at the very front end of the life cycle of a building – or a luminaire. The difference between quantifying embodied energy and CAPEX is that we’ve never bothered ourselves with the energy that it takes to make things – until the climate crisis came along. Now we know how important it is to understand how much our industrial processes are costing the planet – from extraction of ores to running manufacturing plant to the energy required in transportation.

Dan, as Technical Manager of Tamlite, explains how CIBSE TM65 ‘An internationally-applicable methodology for the calculation of embodied carbon in building services engineering‘ works in the context of a major manufacturing company in the UK.
