ERCO: the Art of Lighting the commercial gallery

The ERCO Showroom on Dover Street, opened its doors this month to host a series of workshops on the art of lighting the commercial art gallery. These compact and hands-on workshops engage guests on the theory and practice of getting the right light to showcase a selection of art. ERCO has succeeded in creating an immersive experience where you can play with the light and see the effect on artworks and sculptures, in their newly updated showroom.

The workshops inform, remind and reinforce core practical knowledge and requirements for illuminating artworks and sculptures within the commercial art gallery environment, to create visitor engagement and increase revenue.

Engagement with collectors is one of the critical aspects for galleries. In every exhibition light is a versatile tool to attract clients and convert them into art buyers. ERCO believes, that art gallery lighting gives you the freedom to build up a relationship with potential buyers and to concentrate on your core business, developing your gallery programme, of exhibiting – and selling – art, in the best possible light. We know that the eye follows brightness. However, light not only directs attention, it also creates an ambience and relaxing environment for a purchasing decision.

ERCO’s ethos, is light and not luminaire, and this is apparent through it’s educational workshops, hosted by Matthew Cobham, Culture Cluster Manager, ERCO and Damian Williams, Project Manager. ERCO conveys the importance of perfect light quality and flexibility in storytelling. Flexibility not only means that spotlights can be repositioned and light distribution or light colour can be changed, it also means that these changes can be implemented at any time and quickly, transforming the gallery from a daytime exhibition to an evening event.

The right light acts as a ‘red carpet’ for your gallery, inviting potential buyers into your space, allowing them to immerse themselves in the art and its message. ERCOs approach to commercial gallery lighting is to align with the exhibition concept and the artists’ vision. ‘‘Whether you present art in a white cube, a black box or as an immersive experience – the principles of human visual perception are always the same. And perfect visual comfort is the key. That’s why we talk about light and not about luminaires.’’, Damian Williams, Project Manager, ERCO UK.

Every work of art deserves the highest quality lighting. ERCO offers their experience from many thousands of museum and gallery projects worldwide to find the perfect lighting for your gallery. To book your workshop click on the image below
