Recolight has teamed-up with the LIA to present a one-day conference on how to get the UK lighting sector on its way to achieving Net Zero carbon. It happens in London on Thursday 2nd May 2024 and expands the exciting initiatives that Recolight has nurtured through it’s successful Circular Lighting Live events (happening again this year on 9th October).
.
John Bullock talks with Nigel Harvey CEO of Recolight, and Ayça Donaghy, CEO of the Lighting Industry Association about what we can expect from the day.

.
But let’s just remind ourselves . . . why is Net Zero so important?
The United Nations tells us ‘The science shows clearly that in order to avert the worst impacts of climate change and preserve a livable planet, global temperature increase needs to be limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Currently, the Earth is already about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s, and emissions continue to rise. To keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C – as called for in the Paris Agreement – emissions need to be reduced by 45% by 2030 and reach NET ZERO by 2050‘.
Personally; they had me at ‘preserve a livable planet’.
..
But 2050 seems less like a target and more like a kick-it-down-the-road aspiration from politicians not brave enough to grasp the nettle that’s standing up in front of us. And – yes – this is such a huge topic that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the whole thing and just tiptoe away – let’s leave it to the Net Zero Fairy to sort it all out. But Nigel and Ayça don’t seem to believe in fairies. From what we’re hearing, they believe that it really is down to us to get involved and to create that sustainable future – both for us and for those who come after us.
So the conference is just the start – a kind of introduction to the roadmap that can get us underway the very next day. The conference is on Thursday – we can have plans on the table by Friday lunchtime. Now wouldn’t that be something!!

NET ZERO – Lighting manufacturing in a low carbon world
.
What will the Net Zero conference look at and what’s in it for you and yours?
- How can manufacturers tackle the responsibility of the carbon footprint they generate while making luminaires?
- What measures can help them reduce their impact on the climate?
- What are the priorities, the ‘quick wins’ and real challenges?
- How can we cut carbon, energy use and waste without compromising quality or customer service?
.
The Light Review would like to thank Ayça and Nigel for sparing some of their valuable time to talk to us about Net Zero.
