“If you assume that there is no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there are opportunities to change things, then there is a possibility that you can contribute to a better world.”

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is clear about one thing: the time for action is NOW.
What will that mean in practice? And what needs to CHANGE?
We asked each of our speakers for a few words on why Drivers for Change is such an important topic for our times.

Graham Edgell (Director of Sustainability and procurement for Morgan Sindall)
‘The construction sector is very conservative and cost-conscious. We need a shift in culture so that sustainability and well-being are higher on the agenda. We recognise that better-quality lighting might cost more up-front but can ultimately deliver better value and be more sustainable.’

David Geddes (Director at C20 Target)
Projects are failing at the junction between specification and procurement. If we’re to Build Back Better, and for the ultimate benefit of both project and client, then we really need to see a better understanding of the process of equipment selection.

Florence Lam (Global Lighting Design Director for Arup)
‘It is time to build bridges beyond the lighting sector to drive a shift from human to humanity-centric lighting and deliver a sustainable and regenerative future.’

Phil Marsden (Project Director for Muse Developments)
‘We’re passionate about the need to deliver sustainable and healthy environments that benefit the communities we are working within. Energy-efficient and well-designed lighting is very important. However, a lack of clear and well-informed advice can prevent innovation, particularly in respect of fully understanding the benefits of an apparently ‘more ‘expensive’ solution.’

Mark Ridler (co-founder of Green Light Alliance)
‘There is no circular product without a circular project. And a circular project will be beneficial for human health and well-being in its widest sense.’

Gayathri Unnikrishnan (VP Standard Development for the International WELL Building Institute)
‘Lighting is integral to creating a healthy, happy and sustainable world for all. Each of us has the immense privilege to impact people’s lives with good lighting. However, that privilege comes with responsibility to provide equitable access to quality lighting so we can positively impact people and the planet .’

Simon Wyatt (Director, Sustainability, Cundall)
‘We get lots of interest when we explain how investing in better-quality environments can transform productivity and sustainability – but then we get the response ‘it’s not in my budget – that’s OpEx not CapEx ‘. We need to join the dots if we want to improve human and environmental performance.’
