Insight Series – Places of Worship

Someone once said that every lighting scheme tells a story – and there are no places more redolent of narrative than places of worship. At the core of any lighting design for sacred spaces must be an understanding and appreciation of the Faith. There will be a narrative, regardless of the faith community being served, and it’s our job to bring that narrative to the Faithful.

But places of worship also come with a history, either the history of the building, the history of the faith, the history of the community – or, typically, all three. At this point, it’s not only about lighting for worship, it also becomes lighting for architecture and culture. It’s a wise lighting designer who can pull all of those strands together to create a meaningful whole.

Which is why we approached Mark Sutton-Vane and asked him to share his experiences in this fascinating field of design.

Chris Fordham asks the questions.
